THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW BEFORE HIRING A DJ • Before your DJ plays the first song at your event, do you know what he has done to prepare? • A good DJ will always prepare using his past experience. His preparation should include several phone calls, emails and consultations so that he can gain a thorough understanding of the vision you have for your event. • • DJ Understanding and Compliance: Be perfectly clear with your expectations. Make sure your DJ has a complete understanding is will be in compliance with your ideas and requirements from start to finish. You should both always be on the same page. A good DJ will always make sure he knows what your music preferences are – your likes and dislikes; what types of guests you’re expecting – everything from how many to the age ranges and what type of atmosphere do you envision. • • If you are having a small wedding of 75 people and you want an elegant and conservative reception, and what you got was a loud, obnoxious DJ, non-stop chatter on the microphone, playing bad music with blinding flashing lights and more equipment than a Rolling Stones stadium show you’re your DJ did not prepare and once it’s over, it’s over. There’s no turning back. I • Most DJ’s arrive at a party and have a cookie cutter agenda of music and activities. I do not. It takes the above knowledge in order to tailor his job to your event. • • The success of your event depends largely on the time the DJ has taken to prepare to be the best that he can for YOUR EVENT. He will perform as Master of Ceremonies, making announcements, interacting with guests, coordinating with the other vendors involved in the event and keep the sequence of event flowing. • • While you may think your DJ "just plays music", It’s his experience, talent and expertise that will deliver the reception you have always dreamed of. • While researching your DJ, evaluate the above and ask lots of questions. Word of Mouth Word of mouth is a good place to start when researching a DJ. Perhaps you could ask the people from whom you get the referrals to rate the DJ. Here’s a good rating system:of 5.0 Quality of Service: (4.0/5.0) Responsiveness: (4.5/5.0) Professionalism: (4.0/5.0) Value For Budget: (5.0/5.0) Flexibility: (5.0/5.0) My “Words of Mouth” He was great!!! Not too over the top and in everyone’s face....he was a happy medium. My husband is Black and I am Hispanic, so we needed someone who understood how to keep both sides happy...he did a great job! J Simpson “When I arrived back home from the honeymoon my email and voice mail were full with messages. Everyone said they had a great time. Everyone loved you. My maid of honor said she danced so much she sweats out her hairstyle!!! I hadn't seen my mom dance in years since her stroke. She danced at my wedding. How cool is that? Jose and I sincerely want to thank you for your participation in our special day. You definitely added the fun factor. Our ceremony was beautiful and the music was clear and the timing was just right. As soon as I heard "Ave Maria" I cried. Ohh, before I forget my greatest memory will be of me singing "Last Dance" to all the guests, thanks for handing me the mic and preparing them for my performance... Con Mucho Carino, Kristina & Jose Salazar The "Fortune 500" DJ Company Don’t get lost in the “Business shuffle” Beware of the DJ agencies that give the impression they are a U.S. nationwide, entertainment conglomerate. These companies create a corporation-type image and with their flashy advertisements and presence at virtually every bridal show, try to make themselves seem like a safe and sound choice, but keep this in mind. Most large agencies employ fast-talking sales representatives whose job is to sell you on the company image, not the product. The actual DJ is often an afterthought. Most agencies will not allow you to meet your DJ before you sign a contract because they cannot guarantee your requested DJ will be affiliated with the company when your wedding day arrives. For example: You sign a contract for $1800 and your wedding is booked. Customarily, one or two months before your wedding, the booking agent will schedule a DJ for your wedding considering the following two options: the ‘select’ functions (i.e. highest paying) will be handled by the owners of the company. The DJ’s will be assigned according to the Hierarchy of the contracted price. If your price is not the highest paying job that day, your wedding will be offered to an independent contractor who will accept the job as a subcontracted DJ under the guise of a "preferred DJ" of the agency. The agency will pay the DJ between $250-$500 and they skim the top. Some agencies profit $1200-$1500 from a wedding without plugging in a power cord. The subcontracted DJ makes a days pay with no risk, the agency makes a nice chunk of change for accepting liability and brokering the deal and you get a sub-standard DJ who may not be able to deliver the high standard of DJ service you paid for. It’s win-win for the agency and perfectly legal as you signed a contract with the agency; not your preferred DJ. These agencies book as much business as they can and subsequently overbook the availability of their own "preferred" DJs (or systems) and must resort to outsource their bookings to DJs outside their agency. When you hire a single system DJ company, you will develop a trust and a good working rapport with the one person who worked with you every step of the way from your very first phone call to your Last Dance. Bargain Hunting Choose your DJ by ability, experience and style, and then consider pricing. A reputable and skilled wedding DJ will not work a five hour wedding reception for short money. If you hire a DJ who will work a reception for a low price, don’t expect much. You WILL get what you pay for. The Burnt-Out Veteran DJ Just because a DJ claims to be in the business for over 25 years doesn’t mean he’s any good. This type of DJ will do his tired routines from the 80`s with cheap old props and play the same boring mix of music, week-after-week, year-after-year with no variety. It doesn’t take a musical genius to stand behind DJ equipment and play the same mix of overplayed wedding songs. Some guests cringe after hearing the first three seconds of these songs and run off the dance floor! These songs peaked 25 YEARS AGO and music has evolved since. It is imperative that a DJ keep current with the times and trends in music. Top 40, Pop, 80`s New Wave, Hip Hop, Alternative, Techno, Disco (faded away and returned) and Country went mainstream. Granted, some of these genres of music may not reflect your taste, but wouldn’t you want a DJ who at the very least is familiar with it all of it, carries it in his collection and has it available should your guests want something new and different? All business is constantly evolving and you roll with the changes or you become obsolete. Well, that’s it. At the very least I hope I have given you a better understanding of this business to contribute to the success of your event. After you’ve seen my music lists, my DJ set-up, my wedding page and my references, and add to that my extensive experience and knowledge of music, you will soon realize you made a very wise decision choosing me as the DJ for your event. Thank you and best wishes, Victor M. Santiago Jr. Musica Para Mi Gente
